Guangzhou Circle Listed as 2014’s Eye-Popping New Building

Recently, Guangzhou Circle, newly constructed landmark of the city, has been listed by CNN as one of the ten eye-popping new buildings in the year of 2014, along with another three new Chinese buildings: Shanghai Tower, Changsha’s to-be-built Sky City and Harbin Culture Center.

The recently completed building, designed by the Italian architecture firm AM Progetti, has been dubbed "doughnut" or "Chinese jade" by enthusiastic local residents.

Nestled at the edge of Pearl River, the 138-meter-height building, with its distinctive shape of an ancient Chinese coin, has a clear reflection on the water surface, which forms a number “8” that represents good luck and richness in China.

According to CNN, "The inner hole is unique in building design, and has a diameter of almost 50 meters. The architects say that they wanted to create a landmark building which would defy the western skyscraper stereotype, and were inspired by jade discs and numerological tradition of feng shui."
